"Hello, I am Oluwafemi Stephen.

I found out my blood pressure was high in 2013 and I struggled with it till last year..

At first, I didn't take it seriously, my thought was that my High BP wasn't that serious and it would normalize on it's own.

So I wasn't too bothered about it.

I was however taking Diuretics and Beta Blockers but they only worked for a while and after a few weeks my blood pressure would go back up.

I thought my condition would get better eventually but I was so wrong and one day, the unimaginable happened.

One day, while preparing for work, I started to feel really dizzy.

I immediately sat on my bed thinking the dizziness would stop but it did not.

And after some seconds my eyes started closing and the last thing I remember was falling to the ground.

Fortunately for me my wife was in the bathroom when this happened and heard when I fell to the ground.

She immediately rushed me to the hospital, that was what saved my life.

When I came to, my wife and the doctor were beside me discussing.

I was then told that my fainting was as a result of my blood pressure being dangerously high at 190/130mm Hg.

The doctor said my blood pressure was the first thing they checked when I was brought into the hospital.

I couldn't believe it, I had heard stories of High BP causing people to faint and even die but I didn't ever think it would be my case.

The doctor then further explained that High BP was one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria. According to data from the Nigerian Hypertension Society, hypertension affects approximately 38 to 42 percent of the adult population in Nigeria. This contributing to nearly 400,000 deaths per year.

I wish he had not mentioned that because my fear tripled when I heard that.

So you mean to tell me that so many people die each year because of High BP?

And he said yes, that if High BP is not normalized quickly it can lead to heart attack, stroke and death.

When I heard this I started crying, my life was definitely over, I was going to die soon, that was all that was in my head.

The doctor calmed me down and said with High BP drugs like Diuretics and Beta Blockers, I could manage it.

But I didn't want to manage it, I had been doing that for the past 9 years, I needed my blood pressure normalized.

I was prescribed some drugs and went home but the months that followed were terrible for me.

Feeling dizzy and weak became a part of my every day life.
